Web Developer

Web Developer

Web developers create, improve and maintain sophisticated websites that integrate with other software and databases in order to provide services from online shopping to internet dating.

Web developers are employed by a range of organisations and businesses, including:

  • Large retailers, banks or service organisations
  • Specialised web development firms
  • Software development companies
  • Government departments, educational institutions and media companies

Web developers do the actual building of the website, and their strong coding skills are particularly important for dynamic sites that you can interact with, such as social media, ticket booking sites and online banking. People with web development skills are in demand.

Their skills are different to those of web designers who work on the look and layout of sites and pages. Web designers generally have a qualification in Graphic Design or Web Design and may have to compete for jobs, especially if they're self-employed.

Web developers generally earn:

  • $35-50,000 starting salary
  • $60-80,000 with three or more years' experience

Key tertiary qualifications include:

  • Diploma in Information Technology
  • Bachelor of Information Technology
  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Science or Bachelor of Computing and Mathematical Science

Recommended school subjects:

  • Maths
  • English
  • Digital Technologies
  • Design and Visual Communication
