Geospatial (GIS) Analyst

Geospatial (GIS) Analyst

Geospatial analysts use specialised computer geographical information systems (GIS) to analyse spatial data – information that’s related to a geographical location – and communicate the results via maps, 3D models and diagrams.

As a geospatial analyst you could be involved in:

  • Planning effective and cost-efficient public transportation networks
  • Mapping opportunities for urban growth and identifying where new schools will be needed due to an increase in the number of families with young children
  • Keeping track of where water, phone, power and other utilities are located, especially when they’re underground
  • Identifying areas which are not suitable for building; for example, if they are too close to the coast, have unstable slopes or may be subject to liquefaction
  • Tracking numbers of pest species (such as possums) and their environmental impact

Most GIS analysts in New Zealand are employed by:

  • Local and regional councils, and government agencies such as Land Information New Zealand (LINZ)
  • Specialist GIS consultancy companies
  • Engineering consultancies
  • Utility, transport and forestry companies
  • Universities and research organisations, such as Landcare Research

Job opportunities for people with geospatial skills and experience are good as the use of GIS to manage data and create maps is expanding, and there are relatively few graduates with the right skills.

GIS analysts generally earn:

  • $40-55,000 starting salary
  • $70-100,000 with more experience

Key tertiary qualifications include:

  • Bachelor of Science in Geography, including GIS courses
  • Bachelor of Applied Science in Geographic Information Systems
  • Bachelor of Surveying with GIS courses
  • Postgraduate diploma or Master’s degree in Geographic Information Science

Recommended school subjects:

  • Maths
  • Geography
  • Digital Technologies (especially programming and information management skills)
  • English
