Most traffic signals engineers have qualifications in electronics or computer systems engineering, but others have a background in transportation (civil) engineering.

Traffic signals engineers may be involved in:

  • Modelling traffic movements through intersections using specialised computer software to figure out the best way to configure the lights
  • Monitoring traffic flows via cameras, particularly during peak hours
  • Balancing the demands of different road users – as well as motorists, traffic signals need to work for pedestrians, cyclists and buses
  • Investigating and responding to complaints from the public
  • Maintaining and improving the way the traffic lights at each intersection are connected to the network and to neighbouring intersections

Most traffic signals engineers are employed by:

  • Urban transport agencies, such as Auckland Transport
  • Transport engineering consultancies
  • New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA)

Traffic signals engineers generally earn:

  • $40-55,000 starting salary
  • $60-70,000 with two years’ experience

Key tertiary qualifications:
