Information & Communications Technology (ICT)
Information and communications technology (ICT) deals with the design, creation, and maintenance of computer technology, particularly software and hardware. This can encompass radio, television, mobile phones, satellite systems, computer hardware and software, and Internet connections.
Whether it’s in government, education, industry, entertainment, or culture, ICT professionals are building the careers of the future. If you’re innovative and like working with technology, this could be the field for you.
Getting started
Careers in ICT are creative, cutting-edge, and exciting. So what do you need to do to get started?
- It’s important to have a solid background in maths and science, and it really helps if you like working with technology. Many careers in ICT require some tertiary qualification in Computer Science.
- This field is growing all the time, so you should have a broad range of skills and interests, a big creative streak, and a passion for learning new things.
- Good communication skills are essential. You need to be able to work in teams, write reports, and explain highly technical concepts in a way that managers and customers can understand.
- Most importantly, you need to be enthusiastic about what you do. Employers think that attitude is just as important as education – they’re looking for people who want to make a difference, have fun, and work hard.
