Ambassadors supporting Careers Season
In the Central North Island, Ambassadors Wally Sanford (Surveyor, Cheal Consultants) and Kerin Brockbank (Reservoir Engineer, Contact Energy) were on hand to speak with students and teachers at careers events hosted by Tauhara and Tauponui-A-Tia Colleges.
Wally also travelled to Turangi to help out at Tongariro School’s event with local Ambassador Lisa Kanawa (Senior Policy Advisor, MAF), and Kerin went to Reporoa College to speak with senior Maori students about the career options available to students who continue with maths and science through Year 13.
Career with Graphics
Tauranga Girls’ College Graphics Teacher Chris Ferguson has invited civil engineers, engineering technicians, surveyors and planners to take turns presenting to his Year 11 classes, giving students an idea of the different career pathways related to graphics design.
Career with Science
At Reporoa College, HOD Science Tim McLay scheduled a series of Ambassador visits to let students explore science-related career pathways. The third Ambassador to visit was Sarah, a molecular microbiologist from Scion. She gave a fascinating summary of her work, including her post-graduate study and discovery of a new strain of bacteria. She also gave students a close-up look at termites and the ways they break down waste.
Science Careers Week
Year 10 science students from Napier Boys' High School had five days of presentations from local Futureintech Ambassadors. With one Ambassador visiting each day, the students were able to choose which careers they could hear about. Food technologist Craig started off the week, followed by presentations from an electronics engineer and a surveyor. The week was rounded off by one Ambassador talking about his involvement with environmental issues and another giving a presentation about his career in ICT.
Careers in Food Technology
At Edgewater College, Food Technology teacher Fay Trollip treated her Year 12 and 13 class to a great presentation by Sam, a food technologist from Bluebird. Sam told them about his career pathway, what he does at work and the process he uses to develop a food product.
