In a nutshell: Developing new beverages for the Australia and New Zealand market – turning ideas into products you see on the supermarket shelves!
Why? "I love the diversity of my job. I get to see the whole development process – from creating new drinks in the lab, pilot plant and factory to seeing it for sale in the shops. I also get to work with a wide range of people in manufacturing, marketing, purchasing, quality and packaging."
St Kentigern College, final year subjects: Calculus, Chemistry, Food Technology, Physics, Statistics
Massey University - Albany: Bachelor of Food Technology (Honours)
Earning: $50-60,000 starting salary
Doing Food Technology at school allowed me to participate in activities such as a Team Silver CREST project, the NZIFST/CREST Student Product Development Challenge, and Massey University's Food Technology Big Day Out. It also gave me interaction with the food industry at a young age.
In Year 11 I met a Futureintech Ambassador who talked about her job as a food technologist at a careers evening. This inspired me to follow the same career, so I took the relevant subjects - Calculus, Chemistry and Physics - through to Year 13. There will always be a need for food technologists, as everyone needs to eat.
I was fortunate to gain a Massey University Vice Chancellor's High Achiever Scholarship.
Every summer I worked for a different food company, which gave me lots of experience in the industry. It also helped me get my first job before I'd even graduated.
No two days are the same. I love that I get to spread my time between the lab, pilot plant, factory and my desk. As I have many projects on the go – and all at different stages of development – I've had to learn to prioritise my work load.
As a graduate it's easy to move between departments, such as product development, quality, production - there's an endless list of opportunities - both within the company or the food industry as a whole.
