In a nutshell: Developing new infant formula products, from concept through to final product.
Why? "I like the teamwork involved in developing a new product, and then seeing it on sale in the shop."
St Cuthbert's College, final year subjects: Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, Classics, English
University of Otago: Bachelor of Science, majoring in Human Nutrition; Bachelor of Consumer and Applied Science, majoring in Food Science
I enjoyed Maths at school and think it's important to feel confident in your maths skills so you don't have to rely on a calculator.
I decided to study Human Nutrition because at boarding school I had no control over what food was available. I wanted to learn more about how food and nutrition affects the body. I added Food Science halfway through my degree so that I could have a career in product development.
Every summer I had experience in the industry, working at Nestlé, New Work Deli Kitchen and Cadbury.
There's huge variety in my work. I might be doing new product development or supporting production in the factory. I'm in a team of four technologists, and we work closely with the marketing and sales teams.
We have to consider sensory attributes (look, smell, taste, etc), nutritional qualities, regulations, cost and marketing before turning a new product into something that can be made in a large scale manufacturing environment.
In my previous job at Horleys I developed an energy gel to be taken during intense exercise. That was a completely new product for Horleys so once developed we had to run a sampling campaign amongst athletes.
Last year I travelled to Malaysia, Singapore and Australia for work. I've also lived and worked in Canada and England.
Food technologists need to enjoy researching ingredients and experimenting with new formulations. Good communication skills and strategic 'big picture' thinking are also helpful.
From this role I could move on to work in Research & Development Management, Technical Sales, Business Development or Food Science and Technology development facilitation.
