In a nutshell: I'm on a 12-month technical graduate programme at Frucor which involves rotating through different departments in order to experience different aspects of food technology.
Why? I love the fact that there is no 'typical' day at Frucor.

University of Otago: Bachelor of Science, majoring in Food Science with a minor in Marketing
Food Technology and Biology were my favourite subjects at school. In my Year 12 Food Technology class I developed a dehydrated pasta meal to take on my Duke of Edinburgh tramps, and in Year 13 I developed a new ice cream flavour, which earned me an NZQA scholarship.
I discovered the Food Technology industry at a careers evening when I was 13. From then on I never considered any other career!
My university studies were supported by scholarships, including one from Heinz Wattie's, which also allowed me to do a summer internship in their product development division in Hastings. It was a very useful experience and broadened my knowledge, especially in practical and commercial aspects of food manufacture.
I helped work on two soup projects while I was at Wattie's: 'Soup of the Day' and 'Squeeze & Stir'. It was very exciting to see them on display in the supermarkets.
There is a tremendous variety on Frucor's technical graduate programme, which makes the job so interesting and exciting. Graduates rotate through different departments including technical support, product development, packaging, quality assurance and manufacturing,
So far I've been in the Technical Support team, which is part of Research & Development, and have completed a number of fascinating projects, learnt new skills and responded to some interesting technical challenges. I look forward to continuing to build my knowledge.
My job would suit somebody who is methodical, very willing to learn, displays initiative and - most importantly - is passionate about food science.
