Engineering Geologist

Engineering geologists assess earth conditions – such as the type of soil or rock, and the presence of groundwater – and make sure that geological factors affecting engineering works are identified and dealt with.

Engineering geologists may be involved in:

  • Land development for housing
  • Mining – including pit design, storage facilities for tailings (piles of waste material) and diversion dams
  • Major earthworks for wind farms, roads and other infrastructure
  • Preparing environmental impact analysis reports

  • Oil and gas companies
  • Regional and local government authorities

Engineering geologists earn:

  • $40-50,000 starting salary

Key tertiary qualifications include:

  • Bachelor of Science in Geology, Geophysics or Earth Sciences
  • Postgraduate qualification in Engineering Geology (optional)
