Surveyor/Survey Technician

Surveyors and survey technicians map land features and property boundaries, and accurately locate where new structures such as roads, bridges, buildings and pipes should be constructed. Survey assistants work under the direction of a land surveyor or engineer.

Most surveyors and survey technicians are employed by:

  • Specialised surveying companies
  • Construction and engineering consultancies
  • Land developers
  • Government agencies such as Land Information New Zealand (LINZ)

Job opportunities for surveyors are good, especially in Christchurch as they are needed to inspect sites before rebuilding work can begin.

Surveyors generally earn:

  • $40-50,000 starting salary
  • $50-80,000 with more than five years’ experience

Survey technicians generally earn:

  • $30-40,000 starting salary
  • $40-55,000 with more experience

Key tertiary qualifications include:

  • Bachelor of Surveying for work as a surveyor
  • National Diploma in Surveying for work as a survey technician
  • National Certificate in Surveying for work as a surveying assistant

Recommended school subjects:

  • Maths, especially Algebra, Calculus and Trigonometry
