Agricultural and horticultural consultants work with farm and orchard managers by providing them with science, technology and business advice, and helping them to run their business more efficiently and sustainably.

There's relatively high demand for agricultural and horticultural consultants due to growth in the primary industries, including dairy conversions and other more intensive farming practices, and an ageing workforce.

Employers of agricultural and horticultural consultants include:

  • Farming industry bodies and government agencies such as DairyNZ, Landcorp and Zespri

Key tertiary qualifications include:

  • Bachelor of Agriculture or Agricultural Science
  • Bachelor of Science or Applied Science in Agribusiness, Agricultural Science, Agritech, Animal Science, Horticultural Science, Environmental Management, Molecular Biology, Plant Science
  • Having a postgraduate diploma, Honours or Master's degree may be an advantage
