Harraways produces oat products – from rolled oats to various types of muesli. We also process foods used in commercial soup mixes, such as split peas, blue peas and barley.

It's our 150th birthday this year! Harraways was founded in 1867 and is still operating from its original site in Green Island, Dunedin. We are a privately owned company, employing over 50 staff and running three shifts every day of the week.

New Zealand oats are usually grown in Otago and Southland – we contract a local farmer to grow and harvest oats for us. At the mill we clean and size the oats, then sort them into different grades by width and length.

The oats go through our kiln for a dry heat treatment, then are cut into smaller sizes and cooked before flaking where they're rolled out.

Our products are mainly sold here, although we do export some items to Asia.

To work in our New Product Development department, you need a Food Science or Food Technology degree. The NPD manager comes up with ideas for new products, trials and tests them then develops them for the market.
