Earthquake Resilience


Earthquake resilience is about:

  • Helping communities affected by earthquakes recover as rapidly as possible.
  • Designing and building infrastructure that limits potential earthquake damage and disruption.

Some of the key roles include:

Structural engineers design buildings, bridges and other structures to resist the impact of earthquakes.

Geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists evaluate ground conditions to identify suitable places for building.

Water resources engineers design the infrastructure that supplies freshwater and removes wastewater to resist earthquake damage, and figure out how to fix it after a major earthquake.

Surveyors and GIS analysts measure, analyse and communicate how much movement has occurred.

Planners take earthquakes into account when they develop plans that shape development, particularly in major cities.

IT professionals can design resilient networks, develop apps that can be used to coordinate the recovery and keep people in touch after major events.

Required and recommended school subjects:

  • Physics (required for engineering pathways)
  • Maths, especially Calculus (required for engineering pathways)
  • English
  • Geography
