Almost everything we use – from smart phones, digital TV, home appliances and the internet to computer and telecommunication networks – was designed by somebody with digital technology skills.

Careers in the digital industries are creative and cutting edge, and there’s a huge range of options from website design and development, digital effects and computer animation to software development and network administration, as well as helping other people use computers.

You could be employed in a specialist software or web development company, or work in entertainment, government, education or virtually any industry that needs people who are innovative and like working with technology.

What is Digital Technologies?

The Technology curriculum is often taught as a number of different subjects, but there are core elements that are common to all. These include the key concept of 'intervention by design' and exploring the 'what', 'why' and 'how' of the process by which humans make things and shape their environment.

There are five strands in the Digital Technologies area of the New Zealand school curriculum:

  • Programming and Computer Science
  • Digital Media
  • Digital Information
  • Digital Infrastructure
  • Electronics

Your school may use different names for this subject such as Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Computer Science or Computing.

Why should I take Digital Technologies at school?

Studying Digital Technologies, especially Programming and Computer Science standards, is excellent preparation for tertiary study in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Systems, Network & Mobile Engineering and Information Technology, although it is not a required subject for entry into any of these courses.

You'll need Maths (especially Calculus and Algebra) and Physics to get into engineering courses, and a good background in Maths is necessary for studying Computer Science. English is another good subject, as you'll always need to be able to communicate with clients and work in teams.
