Westland Milk Products is an independent New Zealand co-operative dairy company producing milk powders, butter and other milk products. The company is owned by 384 supplying farmers who elect a board of ten directors.
We're the largest industry in Hokitika, employing over 200 people and collecting milk from Karamea in the north to Franz Josef in the south.
It can be hard to find qualified staff, but because we’re a small company people get to work on a range of different projects and responsibilities, which they wouldn’t in other companies.
We have a formal working style, with a good culture and a loyal workforce – some of our staff have worked here all their lives, and have up to 30 years’ experience. A lot of our managers are people who’ve been promoted and come up through the ranks of the company.
The Company has a strong commitment to education and training. A well-trained, highly-skilled and experienced workforce is essential for an effective and efficient dairying, processing and marketing operation.
This commitment is reflected in the number of people who have gained dairying and related qualifications while working for the company. Employees are encouraged to attend training courses and continue to develop their skills and knowledge.
Our scholarship programme supports West Coast students through tertiary education, and includes holiday work with the company. This is a great opportunity for those who choose to make dairying their career and reflects our commitment to the long-term development of our staff. When our scholarship recipients finish university, they are offered permanent employment if a position is available.
Tertiary cadetships are available to people between the ages of 18-25 who want to study towards a career in the dairy industry. We also have cadetships for young graduates with relevant degrees, such as Food Technology, Food Science and Engineering.
