I was thinking of studying health science but decided on food technology instead when I was 16. My mother was a food teacher, so I had developed an interest in food from her. But reading the newsletter in the Hubbards cereal box was the first time I had heard about food technologists.
I did three summer placements for my degree: at Cookie Time Ltd, Independent Fisheries and a small Fonterra site in Christchurch.
After finishing my degree I worked at the Tatua Dairy Co-op in the Waikato, where I was responsible for developing new ice-cream products all the way from the initial brief through to working with the Sales & Marketing team to sell the product to customers.
I’ve been able to experience a range of roles in the food industry including working on a production line, helping in a microbiology lab and running my own projects. There a plenty of options for my future career – moving into a management role is one possibility.
There’s such a wide range of opportunities in the food industry that being a food technologist can suit lots of different types of people. It can be a very creative job or you can find a role which is very specific about what you need to do.
I’m working on a top secret project at the moment which is really exciting. I’m creating a new product, and I’m managing the whole process.
