Bachelor of Engineering

The Bachelor of Engineering (BE) is a four-year, Level 8 degree that may be awarded with Honours. The degree includes practical work and team projects, but has a strong focus on theoretical knowledge and will suit students who are interested in engineering design and theory.

  • The first year generally involves Maths,Physics and introductory engineering courses.
  • Students choose a specialisation for the next three years of their studies.
  • Students need to complete 800 hours of work experience, generally during the summer holidays.

The BE has been accredited to international standards (Washington Accord), so your qualification will be recognised overseas.

Most universities teach the BE, but specialisations vary:

  • Civil Engineering (Auckland and Canterbury)
  • Chemical, Materials and/or Process Engineering (Auckland, Waikato, Massey, Canterbury)
  • Electrical and/or Electronic Engineering
  • Mechanical and/or Mechatronics Engineering (all except Victoria)
  • Software, Electronic and/or Computer Systems Engineering (all universities except AUT offer at least one)

Other specialisations are only offered by one institution:

  • Biomedical Engineering (Auckland)
  • Engineering Science (Auckland)
  • Forestry (Canterbury)
  • Natural Resources Engineering (Canterbury)
  • Network Engineering (Victoria)
  • Innovation and Engineering Management (Massey)

Entry requirements for the BE vary:

  • Generally you will need University Entrance with 14-18 credits at NCEA Level 3 in each of Calculus and Physics.
  • 14-16 NCEA Level 3 credits in Chemistry are required for some specialisations.
  • Some universities have open entry to the first 'intermediate' year but restrict second year enrolments.
  • Other universities have a higher admission requirement for the first year of the degree. For example, you'll need an average of Merit or more in your 80 best NCEA Level 3 credits to get into engineering at the University of Auckland.
  • If you don't have the necessary credits in Maths and Physics, you may be able to catch up via a bridging course.
  • You could start with a New Zealand Diploma in Engineering or Bachelor of Engineering Technology, then cross-credit your courses and complete a BE in less than four years.
